In the nearly 10 years that International Classic Auctions has been selling vintage and otherwise special cars during Kool Deadwood Nites, owner Stanley Torgerson says he has a true one of a kind this year.
It’s a slick white 1996 Dodge Viper sportster. It carries the signatures of automotive legend Carroll Shelby and his main mechanic Dave Evans. Fat Albert Motor Sport did some retooling, completed in 2007, on the 8-cylinder, 1,100-horsepower car.
The result? A “collector machine,” Torgerson said.
It’s been clocked at 298 mph on the Salt Flats in Utah.
Construction cost: $1.2 million.
“We’ve done some national advertising and an e-mail campaign to the people in that bracket of that particular car,” Torgerson said. “It’s a crazy world; somebody from Rapid City could buy it. We’ll have people fly in and a lot of the big hitters are coming. … I think there is a very good chance that it will sell.”
Torgerson said they will introduce the “the belle of the ball” Saturday afternoon at Deadwood Gulch Resort. On Sunday, the sale area will open at 8:30 a.m. and bidding on the cars will begin at 10 a.m. The Viper will be auctioned off at 2 p.m.
There’s more for sale, from new Camaros to street rods and classics to bank repossessions and estate vehicles selling without reserve. “We’ve got everything for the $5,000 guy to the $800,000 or $900,000 guy,” Torgerson said.
For preapproval on a million-dollar car loan, the Deadwood Wells Fargo wants your financial statements for the past five years, current income verification and proof of insurance. If you qualify, the five-year, 6 percent interest loan on $1.2 million will cost $23,197.81 in monthly payments, said spokeswoman Amy Kirchhevel.
Frank Pavich of American Family Insurance in Deadwood informally estimated full-coverage at $24,000 to $25,000.
“I’d like to write that policy,” he said.
For the prequalified buyers bringing their bank’s letter of guaranteed financing, Torgerson will accept your major credit card, even a local check. “We make it pretty easy.”
